T.J. Detweiler Costume Guide (Recess)
Published · Updated
T.J. Detweiler is the leader of the gang in Recess, Disney's late-1990s cartoon about the playground politics of Third Street Elementary. His outfit never changes: a red baseball cap worn backwards, an olive-green jacket zipped partway over a white T-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. It is one of the simplest cartoon costumes there is, and everyone who grew up with the show gets it from the cap alone.
Because it's just clothes, this works for any age and any budget. The payoff comes with a group: Spinelli, Gretchen, Vince, Mikey and Gus are all equally easy, and we have guides for Spinelli and Gretchen already.
At a glance
- Difficulty: Very easy
- Rough budget: $20–$60, often nothing
- Time to put on: 2 minutes
- What people recognise first: Backwards red cap + green jacket
What you need
- Plain red baseball cap — Worn backwards, always. No logo, or cover the logo.
- Olive-green zip-up jacket — A lightweight bomber or windbreaker in olive green. T.J.'s is slightly oversized and zipped halfway.
- White crew-neck T-shirt — Shows at the chest where the jacket is unzipped.
- Blue jeans — Regular or slightly baggy fit in a mid blue.
- White sneakers — Simple white trainers.
- Brown short wig (optional) — T.J. has short brown hair that pokes out under the cap. Only needed if your hair is very different.
How to put it together
Outfit
- White T-shirt, jeans and sneakers.
- Add the green jacket zipped about halfway so the T-shirt shows.
- Turn the red cap backwards and pull it down slightly.
Details
- T.J. has a round face, a gap in his grin and freckles in some art; a few freckles with an eyebrow pencil is a nice touch.
- He's a schemer and a leader: thumbs in the jacket pockets, big grin, mid-plan.
About the character
Recess ran on ABC and later Disney Channel from 1997 to 2001, with a feature film, Recess: School's Out, in 2001. Created by Paul Germain and Joe Ansolabehere, it treated the playground as a society with its own king, laws and factions. T.J. Detweiler, voiced first by Ross Malinger and later by Andrew Lawrence, is the good-natured troublemaker who leads the six main friends.
His unchanging outfit, like those of the rest of the gang, was designed for instant recognition in a cast of dozens, which is exactly what makes it a good costume now. The backwards red cap in particular has become shorthand for the whole show.
Frequently asked questions
What does T.J. wear in Recess?
A red baseball cap worn backwards, an olive-green zip-up jacket over a white T-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers. It's the same in every episode.
What should the rest of the Recess gang wear?
Spinelli: orange beanie, red leather jacket, black dress over striped tights and boots. Gretchen: blue dress, white collar, glasses and braids. Vince: green number-1 jersey and red shorts. Mikey: white T-shirt, green trousers. Gus: glasses, army-green shirt and khakis.
Can kids and adults both do a T.J. costume?
Yes. It's ordinary clothing in every size, which makes it a good family or mixed-age group costume.
Does the cap have to be red?
Yes. The backwards red cap is the single most recognisable thing about T.J.; with a different colour the costume reads as a generic 90s kid.
